Thirty-six invisible characters live in our library, and for any given job about thirty of them are the wrong choice. This is the short field guide: five common jobs, the codepoint that fits each, and the property that makes it fit — so the next time a paste fails, you know what to reach for instead.
Job 1: a blank username or nickname
Use the Hangul Filler, U+3164. Name fields trim whitespace and often demand a letter; U+3164 is officially a letter that draws nothing, so it clears both hurdles. It blanks nicknames in games, TikTok display names, Discord server profiles and WhatsApp. Runner-up when an app balks: the Halfwidth Hangul Filler (U+FFA0), same letter status, narrower heritage. The full background lives in the U+3164 reference.
Job 2: a message that arrives empty
Use the Braille Pattern Blank, U+2800. Messengers refuse pure whitespace but accept symbols, and this one's entire glyph is empty space. One makes a blank bubble; several with line breaks make a tall one. It is also the safest pick for Instagram highlight names, where its small visible width does not matter under a circle.
Job 3: invisible presence inside visible text
Use the Zero-Width Space, U+200B. It vanishes between letters: it lets long words wrap cleanly, slips a break opportunity into a hashtag, or defeats naive exact-match filters. It is not for names — most validators strip it — but inside sentences it is the specialist, with its quirks documented in the U+200B reference.
Job 4: keeping things together
Use the Word Joiner, U+2060 — or the classic No-Break Space, U+00A0, when you want a visible gap. Both forbid a line break at their position. The no-break space shows a normal-looking gap («10 kg» stays whole); the Word Joiner glues invisibly with zero width. Avoid the older U+FEFF for this — its double life as a file byte-order mark earns it special treatment in too many systems.
Job 5: holding a blank line open
Any character the platform keeps — via the caption tool. Instagram and TikTok collapse empty lines in captions and bios; a line that contains an invisible character is not empty and survives. The line-break tool plants one on every blank line of a caption in a single pass.
The habit that beats memorizing
Jobs change, apps update, and the specific winner can rotate — but the groups hold: letters for names, symbols for messages, zero-width for inside text, no-break for glue. When in doubt, check what your clipboard really carries in the test area, and let the group guide the retry. That habit outlives any single codepoint.
